English Translation

Translated from the Chinese article published by MS Sport Media.

Overview: An Xiangyi reflects on her free skate, the technical and mental adjustment from a smaller rink to a full-size arena, and the demands of a busy competition schedule. She also discusses managing a lower-back problem, possible changes to demanding positions, and the importance of rest and program refinement.

Adapting to the ice surface

An reviews the feeling of her free skate, including a reference transcribed as “Golden Armour”; the Chinese notes do not establish whether this means the music, a program theme or a costume.

She explains that the smaller rink at the earlier AO competition in Hong Kong—described in the notes as a little over 1,400 square metres—made the skating feel faster. That environment encouraged more decisive take-offs and less hesitation.

Returning to a standard-size rink presented a different challenge. Without the same proximity to the boards as a visual reference, she sometimes hesitated at take-off and felt nervous or shaky. Recognising that change, she plans to adjust her timing in training and become more comfortable with the larger space.

Transcript note: “AO” is retained here because its expansion in the Chinese text is uncertain.

Managing the schedule and her back

With several competitions ahead and some physical discomfort, particularly in her lower back, An is considering how best to manage her workload.

If her back does not allow her to maintain demanding positions, she may learn alternatives that require less flexibility or strain, or modify the shape of a spin position. The precise positions referred to in the Chinese notes are not clear enough to assign a definitive technical name.

Alongside those possible changes, she wants to refine the programs and get more sleep to support her recovery.

Perspective on age and competitive standing

The conversation also acknowledges the injuries affecting a number of Chinese skaters.

Responding with humour to a question about being “older”, An points to her current position among the top five Chinese women. She does not see age alone as defining a competitive disadvantage, and places more emphasis on where she stands as a skater now.
