A first international outing at senior level
Lucius Kazanecki is pleased to have completed the remaining elements after a mistake on his opening jump. The error meant the performance fell short of his expectations, but he remains positive about his first international competition of the season.
This is also his first international event at senior level. In competitive terms, he does not feel a dramatic difference from juniors: the standards he sets for his own performance remain the same.
The surroundings feel familiar, with media attention and an atmosphere comparable to the Junior Grand Prix Final he experienced the previous year.
Trusting Lori Nichol’s musical instincts
The short-program music was ultimately chosen by choreographer Lori Nichol rather than by Kazanecki himself.
He shared his preferences and the kinds of music he felt might suit him, then trusted her to make the final decision based on her understanding of his skating. He has great confidence in her ability to find the right fit.
Working with Nichol had long been a dream. He initially hesitated to approach her because he was unsure whether he was ready, but eventually reached out and was delighted that she agreed to work with him.
He regards her earlier programs as masterpieces and admires her ability to create pictures on the ice. He cannot recall a program of hers that he has disliked.
Transcript note: A skater named in this part of the Chinese notes is transcribed as “Nikita Baranov”; that reference has not been confirmed.
Reconsidering the season’s goals
His original aim was to earn a second senior Grand Prix assignment. After the mistakes here, he feels that target has become much harder to achieve.
Rather than remain fixed on one outcome, he wants to adjust his perspective and work towards a place on the World Championships team. For him, it is important to stay flexible and respond to the competitive situation as it develops.
Becoming more than a jumper
Kazanecki recognises that his jumping is already well regarded, while skating skills remain an area in which he receives criticism and has room to improve.
He does not want to be known simply as a “jumping machine”. He wants to develop the quality of his skating as a whole, and says that skating itself gives him even more enjoyment than jumping.
That means adding more considered pauses, more intricate steps and greater variety within the program, rather than skating through it mechanically.
He views each competition as a chance to experiment and learn to adapt. One numerical reference in the transcript is unclear, but the intention is to give the program more layers and richer content.
His objective is to keep his jumping strengths while making substantial progress in skating skills and expression.
