Guignard / Fabbri: Developing a New Free Dance Through Competition

Preparing for the demands of the Grand Prix

For Charlène Guignard and Marco Fabbri, competing before the Grand Prix series is an opportunity to gather feedback and strengthen the overall performance. One priority is to finish the program in better physical condition.

Although full run-throughs have begun to feel comfortable in training, competition brings a different combination of adrenaline, preparation and pressure. That is why they chose to enter two events before the Grand Prix: to become accustomed to those sensations before the season’s major competitions.

A costume made their own

Asked about the costume that had caught the attention of Chinese fans, they explained that, for the first time, they had bought the basic suit online.

It still needed adjustments. They added details, decorative elements and lines to improve the fit and give it a more personal identity. The costume had featured in their exhibition program the previous season, which in turn inspired the new free dance.

They initially considered creating a new costume, but ultimately felt that this one remained the best fit for the concept. With further decoration, they decided to keep it.

From a playful exhibition to a more searching free dance

The previous season’s exhibition had taken a comic, light-hearted approach. They enjoyed it enough to explore how its central ideas—robots and artificial intelligence—might develop into something more serious for competition.

They retained the first piece of music from the exhibition, then added further sections to expand the structure and deepen the concept. The intention was to preserve the distinctive visual language while giving the free dance a more substantial expressive range.

Taking the Olympic journey one competition at a time

Asked about preparation with Olympic qualification on the horizon, they described an approach consistent with previous seasons. They view the Grand Prix series, Grand Prix Final, European Championships and World Championships as important stages in that preparation.

Rather than become preoccupied with the eventual outcome, they want to concentrate on the competition in front of them and progress step by step.
