Turning preparation into performance

Caroline and Michael were very pleased with their rhythm dance. They felt that the work they had done since their season opener had translated effectively into competition. Rather than making substantial changes between events, they had concentrated on consistency and precise execution. On the ice, they remained composed, focused and well connected as a partnership.

The audience’s enthusiasm was particularly tangible towards the end of the program. Mistakes at their previous competition had prevented them from fully experiencing that exchange of energy. This time, the response from the stands helped carry them through the closing moments.

A rhythm dance designed to connect

In response to this season’s ice dance rule changes, they have placed greater emphasis on audience engagement. Their aim is to make the program more compelling and exciting, projecting their energy around the arena rather than directing it solely towards the judges. They believe that judges can also sense the audience’s response.

Michael sees the sport’s growing emphasis on connecting with spectators as a positive development that can help ice dance reach a wider audience.

Caroline considers the pattern-dance transition a particular strength of theirs under the new rules. It offers an opportunity to demonstrate technical ability while balancing entertainment with skating quality. They want to engage the crowd without losing the character of the dance or the precision of their skating.

Michael also welcomes the return of a prescribed pattern, believing that a shared technical framework allows for a fairer comparison between teams. Although they have competed only twice so far, he is encouraged by the direction it is taking.

Discovering Almaty

On their first visit to Kazakhstan, both skaters have enjoyed the city, the venue, the spectators, the food and the atmosphere. The warmth of the welcome and the organisation of the competition have exceeded their expectations and made them feel at home.

Michael described drawing energy from the sunlight rising over the mountains. Caroline recalled enjoying the warmth of the sun with the mountains in the distance.

A keen coffee enthusiast, Michael recommended a local speciality café and praised its house-roasted coffee. Caroline, however, is avoiding caffeine until the competition is over to help manage pre-competition anxiety. She plans to explore the city’s cafés after the free dance.

Gratitude for continued support

They expressed heartfelt appreciation for fans who had shared their disappointment at missing out on the Olympics. Michael thanked supporters for staying with them and said that he hopes their performances will continue to bring people joy.

For Caroline, making spectators happy is central to why they skate. She sees the fans’ support as fundamental to the sport, and takes great pleasure in presenting two programs that audiences can enjoy.

Once the competition is over, a brief tour of Almaty’s coffee shops is on the agenda.
