Zhang Ruiyang: Finding Consistency Before Raising the Difficulty
MS Sport | Interview notes from the 2025 Cup of China
Moving from juniors to seniors
One of Zhang Ruiyang’s first priorities for the new season was a change of style.
“I wanted to try something different and present more mature programs—a transition, in a way, from juniors to seniors.”
She hopes to develop both her movement and her attention to detail beyond the programs she skated as a junior.
For the free skate, she chose *Miss Saigon*. She particularly enjoys the choreographic sequence, where she feels she can bring out the music’s storytelling.
“My free skate and short program are quite different in style. Challenging myself with different styles and learning to make them work will help me become a more complete skater.”
“The training has paid off”
Zhang scored 61.71 in the Cup of China short program.
She followed it with a relatively steady free skate to *Miss Saigon*. All her spins and the step sequence received the highest level, and her 117.83 points set a personal best for the free skate at the time.
Her total of 179.54 placed her seventh in the women’s event.
Afterwards, she was broadly satisfied. She felt that the work she had put into training was beginning to show in competition. For a skater newly arrived at senior level, the experience of another major international event was valuable in itself.
Adjusting the layout for a more complete performance
At Cup of China, Zhang did not pursue technical difficulty at any cost.
The first two jumping passes in her free skate at the earlier Milan Olympic qualifier had not gone as planned. For Cup of China, she and her team adjusted the layout to give priority to consistency and the program as a whole.
That reflects how she currently approaches competition:
First deliver the complete program; then build towards greater difficulty.
The adjustment produced a positive result, but reducing risk is not her long-term objective. She wants to keep improving consistency while gradually restoring the technical difficulty.
For a young skater taking her first steps in seniors, the balance is still taking shape: difficulty, reliability and the ability to present a complete performance.
Only a month after securing an Olympic women’s quota place for China, she was making her first appearance at the Cup of China Grand Prix. Senior competition is bringing new experiences in quick succession.
Her direction after this event is clear:
Find stability, then keep raising the standard.
